Beautiful Bordeaux from the Millennium (And Before)

Wines from the 2000 vintage of red Bordeaux across the board boast ripe succulent fruit and fine, firm tannins, with many displaying the structure, depth and length that mark truly great claret. The wonderful late summer weather seems to have given the Médoc the edge, producing marginally more complex wines. Nevertheless the best of St. Emilion and Pomerol have provided some of the very finest wines of the whole vintage.  The 1995 Bordeaux also enjoyed excellent growing conditions and produced superior results, especially among the First Growths.  These wines are mature and should drink well over the next 10 years.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Château Lynch-Bages, Pauillac; WS 96, RP 97, “exhibits admirable purity, texture…and power combined with elegance.”
  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Château Figeac St. Emilion; WS 92,”Full-bodied, with velvety tannins;” RP 93, “pinpoint precision, finesse, and purity…”
  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Cos d’Estournel, Saint-Estèphe; WS 92, “remarkably polished…;” RP 92, “an outstanding wine…”
  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc; WS 91, “Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish;” RP 89
  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac; WS 93, “Wonderfully ripe and decadent;” RP 90, “A wine of tremendous purity…”

Vine and Dine with Luiano

Luiano is an ancient fort, built in the late middle ages, that spans 40 hectares in the Chianti Classico appellation of Tuscany, Italy, just 10 miles south of Florence.  Producing wine and olive oil since the 19th century, Luiano is a true Tuscan institution. In 1959, the Palombo family took over the winery after being enchanted by its rich history and beauty. In 1996, Antonio, Alberto’s son, followed suit trading his career in banking for a life in the vineyards. Together with his children Alessandro and Felicia, Antonio has committed to preserving Luiano’s legacy while ushering in innovations.

Join Alessandro Palombo for a multi-course pairing dinner highlighting Tuscany’s indigenous varietals, especially Sangiovese. Awesome Aubert

Mark Aubert has loved farming since … well, since forever.  He was raised in St. Helena with farming in his blood and returned to the Napa Valley after university graduation.  A chance meeting with winemaker Helen Turley launched his distinguished winemaking career which included a 12-year stint at Peter Michael where he followed Helen Turley and was appointed head winemaker at the age of 28. Aubert succeeded Turley again several years later at Colgin Cellars.  He launched his own brand in 1999 and his vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays quickly received critical acclaim.

“The essence of making great wine is rooted in a relationship with the land – it’s about the soil, about growing, about nurturing, about farming.  We look to nature for guidance and to science for insight, as we craft wine with minimal intervention so a sense of place is elegantly reflected in every bottle of Aubert wine.”

Gloria in Excelsis

Château Gloria is a Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Julien appellation, located in the central part of the Haut-Médoc.  Regarded as a well-made wine with the best characteristics of Saint-Julien, it is estimated by many to be on par with the classified growths. In Alexis Lichine’s 1978 reclassification of the Medoc wines, he listed it as a “Crus Supérieur.” A relatively young estate, Château Gloria was founded in 1942, and added to over the years with land bought from the surrounding classified estates.  The origin of the terroirs, the care taken over the growing and the vinification all help to explain its world-renowned quality.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 1970 Château Gloria, Saint-Julien
  • 2 – 750 ml 1971 Château Gloria, Saint-Julien
  • 2 – 750 ml 1975 Château Gloria, Saint-Julien

Stonestreet Estate Vineyards
Untamed. Uncharted. Uncommon.

Stonestreet Estate Vineyards is the story of a family’s vision to defy the limits of California winegrowing. Jess Stonestreet Jackson and Barbara Banke established the estate in 1995, and their son Christopher Jackson and his wife Ariel continue the legacy — and the middle name “Stonestreet” has now been passed from father to son for three generations.

One finds a collection of distinctive single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, all wines carved from an extreme landscape.

Long-time supporter of Très Bonne Année, Craig Ellick, Stonestreet National Wine Ambassador, will be your host for the evening.  Craig began his career with Jackson Family wines in 1996 working for Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara.  He moved around the country with Jackson and was promoted to Jackson Estate Brand Ambassador in 2014.  In 2017, he was named Stonestreet Winery Ambassador in California after eighteen years on the road for Jackson Family Wines.  He will give a perspective on the outstanding wines you will be tasting and will share with you his appreciation and love for wine.

Great Italian Reds

Despite the current popularity of Super Tuscans, which incorporate imported French grape varieties in the blend, Italy’s greatest world class red wines were initially based on native Italian varietals, especially Nebbiolo in the Piedmont region and Sangiovese in Tuscany.  Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont, Barolo and Barbaresco.  Its name evokes the region’s foothills on cool autumn mornings, when the valleys and vineyards lie hidden under a ghostly blanket of nebbia (fog).  Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as “tar and roses.”  Powerful, intense Barolo is the most famous and prestigious Nebbiolo-based wine.  It is known for its potential for long aging, often maturing gradually over several decades.

Sangiovese is a red Italian wine grape variety that derives its name from the Latin sanguis Jovis, “the blood of Jupiter.” Though it is the grape of most of central Italy, it is most famous as the only component of Brunello di Montalcino.  Brunello (“little brown”) was the name originally given to the grape variety in the local region; it was eventually determined to be a variety of Sangiovese Grosso, but the original name persists.  Brunellos have a fleshy texture with common aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, leather and violets.  The high acidity of the wine allows it to pair well with food, especially grilled meat and game.

  • 12 – 750 ml 2012 Pio Cesare Ornato Barolo DOCG in OWC; WS 92, WA 92, “this Barolo is well integrated and seamless in delivery.”
  • 12 – 750 ml 2010 Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli DOCG in OWC; WA 98+; “sharp, pristine and immaculate . . . a phenomenal achievement…”

Best of Both Worlds: Wine and Fashion

Wine and Fashion lovers rejoice! Just West of Milan in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, feast your eyes on Viberti. Grab a few of your closest friends and enjoy three days exploring the beauty and history of the winery. Founded in the early twentieth century by Antonio Viberti, an innkeeper and restaurateur the wines were originally produced from the Estate vineyard exclusively for the patrons of the family restaurant. Now home to some of the most elegant and world-renowned Barolos, this trip is sure to please.

You’ll then visit another great Piedmontese wine family, Marziano Abbona.  Their Marchesi di Barolo estate encompasses approximately 110 hectares of vineyards in the Langhe which are considered some of the finest in Piedmont. From vineyards established early in the 19th century came wines simply referred to as “the wine from Barolo.” Today it is still a family business and its historic stone cellar stores a library of over 40,000 bottles with vintages dating back to 1859.  One of the highlights of your trip will be to dine with a member of the Marziano Abbona family. The philosophy of the family is: “We make traditional wines, and we’re not afraid to say so. We’re proud of our identity. Every wine that knows how to inspire must also know how to tell its story, its own history.” The history of the Abbona winery is full of hard work and challenges, but also loyalty to tradition and passion for experimentation. At the heart of the story are the hills of the Langhe and hard work in the vineyards, but also the territory of Dogliani and one of its most extraordinary products:  Dolcetto.

You will also be able to visit an iconic white wine estate, La Scolca.  La Scolca is an artisanal winery, which pioneered modern, controlled vinification in stainless steel to preserve the subtle fruit of the Cortese grape. The 62-acre La Scolca Estate is owned and directed by Giorgio Soldati, who ensures that yields are kept low, well below the legal maximum, through severe pruning and thinning. Their premier label is their Gavi dei Gavi, named after a town in the Apennine Mountains in the region of Piedmont, near Liguria. This incredible wine has been ninety years in the making.

Cap off your trip with two glorious nights in Milan, the “Fashion Capital of Italy.”  Ciao!

Rarefied Rhones

Located along a section of the Rhone River in southeastern France, the Rhone wine region is really two distinct areas.  For red wines, the northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.  Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made primarily from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvedre. The greatest appellation is Chateauneuf-du-Pape, which may contain up to thirteen different grape varieties. Cotes du Rhône Village is the appellation given to quality wines from other villages in the area.  In both Northern and Southern regions, there are certain quality producers whose wines are elevated in status and command lofty prices.  This collection offers a sampling of the finest.

Includes:

  • 2 – 750 ml 1988 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie; RP 95, “a profound example of Cote Rotie.”
  • 1 – 750 ml 1994 M. Chapoutier Ermitage “De L’Oree”, White; RP 99, “Extremely powerful, full-bodied, and unctuously textured…”

Magnificent Masseto

Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia is an Italian wine producer in the DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, known as a producer of “Super Tuscan” wine.  In addition to Ornellaia, their great Bordeaux-style red, Merlot grapes from the 17-acre Masseto vineyard have been produced as a single varietal wine since 1986.  Masseto vineyard enjoys a particular climate. The Mediterranean sun shines over the vines throughout the year while a gentle wind keeps the temperatures moderate during the summer. Among the first people to realize the potential of the great terroir of the Masseto hill was the great Russian-American enologist, Andrè Tchelistcheff, a man of great experience who contributed to the conception of Masseto in the early 1980s.  Following his precious advice, the team at Masseto planted the vineyard and committed themselves to make, over the years, the most perfect Merlot wine.

“Masseto is a very special wine, one that simply goes beyond the excellence of the wine. It represents a unique world, a choice that is exquisitely sensitive to the values incarnated by the earth and man’s labors thereon.”

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 2003 Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia Masseto; WS 91, WA 93; “displays much opulence in its generous fruit, with awesome concentration, outstanding length…”

Magical Margaux

Château Margaux is considered one of the finest wine estates in the world, with its legendary bottle of 1787 alone insured for more than $225,000. Château Margaux (previously known as La Mothe de Margaux) is owned and operated by a Greek family from the Peloponnese. Born in Patras in 1915, André Mentzelopoulos, son of a hotelier, decided to leave home and become a citizen of the world. In 1977, just as Bordeaux wines were emerging from a serious economic and qualitative crisis, the entrepreneur bought the Château Margaux wine estate, which architect Louis Combes had designed in a style inspired by Greece. The ionic architecture filled André with pride and reminded him of Greece.

Located at the commune of Margaux on the left bank of the Garonne estuary in the Médoc region, France, the first growth estate has 82 hectares under vine, with cabernet sauvignon inevitably dominant (75 percent) with 20 percent merlot making up most of the rest, along with a smattering of cabernet franc and petit verdot. Under the guidance of renowned oenologist Emile Peynaud, Mentzelopoulos revitalized the Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux. Since André’s death in 1980, the estate has been run by his daughter Corinne, who stated, “Owning and running Château Margaux is a unique privilege, and I always keep in mind that it has been there for five centuries and it will live way after me and my family.”

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 1986 Château Margaux, Margaux
“This has matured fully with a briar patch note framing the core of dried currant, blackberry and bitter cherry fruit. Impressive for depth and power,” WS 95; “A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux. The color is still a dense ruby/purple. With notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050,” RP 98

A Very Viberti Dinner

Claudio Viberti represents the third generation to run the family business.  At a young age, Claudio stepped up to the challenge of managing all aspects of the winery, from winemaking to sales.  In an effort to prove himself, Claudio set out to ameliorate the quality of the wines and establish the brand in the global marketplace.  In the cellar, Claudio strives to create elegant wines that are a true reflection of his home.  He firmly believes that quality wines are attained in the vineyard and has sought out some of the most prestigious properties in Barolo adding to the Viberti holdings.  By combining modern techniques and traditional methods, he has achieved a unique style all his own.  A self-proclaimed “evolutionist,” Claudio states, “Setting new, more demanding goals is a necessity for the development of any business.  The know-how passed down through the generations only takes you so far; you must also improve upon your techniques in order to reach a new level.  It is important for family businesses not to become so deeply rooted in tradition that they refuse to evolve with the times.”

Gamble – Bid on a Sure Thing!

Napa native Tom Gamble, owner of Gamble Family Vineyards, is a farmer first. “My most lasting memory of childhood is dirt – playing in dirt, walking in dust behind the tractor, wearing out our jean seats sliding down shale hillsides.” His boyhood days often began before sunrise – herding cattle, working irrigation lines and emulating older ranchers and farmers from the back of the pack. Even when he left the valley to attend college, Tom held fast to his roots, where the Gamble family first came four generations ago.  Tom purchased his first vineyard in 1981. He is the first member of his family to make wine but hopes he is not the last to work the land. Gamble Family Vineyards is his legacy for future generations, inspired by the hard work of generations past. Good wine begins on the vine.

Burgundian Bounty

Burgundy wine (Bourgogne) is made in the Burgundy region in eastern France in the valleys and slopes west of the Saône, a tributary of the Rhône. The famous red wines produced here are made from Pinot Noir grapes, while white wines are made from Chardonnay.  Over the centuries, Burgundy has become known for being the best land in the world for producing both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and it is for this reason that Burgundy wines have received such acclaim.

Burgundy has a higher number of appellations d’origine contrôlée (AOCs) than any other French region, and is often seen as the most terroir-conscious of the French wine regions. The various Burgundy AOCs are classified from carefully delineated Grand Cru vineyards down to more non-specific regional appellations.  Bottle prices range from well into the thousands for Grand Crus down into the $20’s and $30’s for wine labeled simply “Bourgogne.”  The practice of delineating vineyards by their terroir in Burgundy goes back to medieval times, when various monasteries played a key role in developing the Burgundy wine industry.  The influence of the church became important in Charlemagne’s era. The Cistercians created Burgundy’s largest wall-surrounded vineyard, the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot, in 1336. They were also the first to notice that different vineyard plots gave consistently different wines. They therefore laid the earliest foundation for the naming of Burgundy crus and the region’s terroir thinking.

This collection contains mature examples of some of Burgundy’s finest and most celebrated wines.

Wines of the Century

Chateau Haut-Brion, a Bordeaux first-growth from Pessac-Leognan, has a long and storied history.  Although grapes are thought to have been grown on the property since Roman times, the estate Château Haut-Brion originated in 1525.  The first records of Haut-Brion wine were found in the wine cellar ledger of the English King Charles II in 1660; this was the first mention in any language of estate-named claret and is among the many proofs that Haut-Brion was created specifically for the English market.  In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, then American minister to France, came to Bordeaux and visited the estate.  His notes placed Haut-Brion among the four estates of first quality.  In 1855 it was awarded the status of first growth, the only wine in the classification to come from outside the Médoc.   After a series of unsuccessful owners during difficult times, the American banker Clarence Dillon bought Château Haut-Brion in 1935 and the wine returned to its former exalted status.  In 1976, the 1970 vintage of Haut-Brion ranked fourth among the ten French and California red wines in the historic “Judgment of Paris” wine competition.  Members of the Dillon family are still involved in the ownership and production of the estate today.  1959 was a great year for Bordeaux, with initial ratings for Haut-Brion of 98 by both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker.  Vintage 1961 Bordeaux is considered by many experts to be the greatest wine produced in the 20th century, and Parker gave Haut-Brion a perfect 100 score.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 1959 Château Haut-Brion; RP 98 (in 1994); “Super-concentrated, with layer upon layer of fat, supple, jammy fruit, a voluptuous  texture, and a sweet, long, heady finish.”
  • 1 – 750 ml 1961 Château Haut Brion, RP 100, “The dark garnet-colored 1961 Haut-Brion is pure perfection, with gloriously intense aromas of tobacco, cedar, chocolate, minerals, and sweet red and black fruits complemented by smoky wood. It is extremely full-bodied, with layers of viscous, sweet fruit. This wine is akin to eating candy. Consistently an astonishing wine!”

A Bouquet of Bordeaux

Bordeaux wine is produced in southwest France, centered on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department.  Its major sub-regions include Médoc, Graves, Pomerol, and St. Emilion, plus Sauternes, known for dessert wine.  It is the largest wine growing area in France, producing some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. The vast majority of wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called “claret” in Britain).  The predominant grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with proportions varying according to region.  Three other grapes may be used in smaller quantities:  Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.   Dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon is also produced in some areas.

Vineyards were introduced to the Bordeaux region by the Romans, probably in the mid-1st century, and wine production has been continuous in the region since then. In the 12th century, the popularity of Bordeaux wines in England increased dramatically following the marriage of Henry Plantagenet and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The marriage made the province of Aquitaine part of the Angevin Empire, and thenceforth the wine of Bordeaux was exported to England. In 1855, brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines of the Medoc region from first to fifth growths (crus) according to a château’s reputation and selling price. In general, the classification is still a valid indicator of quality, with classified growths surpassing most other wines from the region.

This collection presents an exclusive sampling of mature classed growths; it also includes a top rated dry white from Graves and a Merlot-predominant Pomerol red from the spectacular 1982 vintage.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 1993 Château Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Leognan; RP 94, “full-bodied, super-concentrated flavors…”
  • 2 – 750 ml 1982 Château Le Gay, Pomerol; RP 97+, “Full-bodied with velvety tannins…”
  • 1 – 750 ml 1989 Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de Las Cases, Saint-Julien; (Second growth); WS 96, “Long and flavorful…;” RP 93, “elegant, full-bodied…”
  • 1 – 750 ml 1990 Château Leoville Barton, Saint-Julien (Second growth); RP 95, “an exceptional wine…”
  • 2 – 750 ml 1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Saint Juilien (Second growth); RP 96, “concentrated, and classic.”
  • 1 – 750 ml 2002 Château Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (First growth); RP 94, “Wonderfully pure…brilliant, elegant…;” WS 95,”Beautiful.”

Sippin’ in Siena

Arguably, Tuscany is the most beautiful region of Italy and is the home of Sangiovese, the most important grape varietal of Italy. Your wine experience will be so very memorable because of the tasting of wines from the best producers in Tuscany with the highlight being your tour, tasting and lunch at Castella Banfi, in Montalcino. La Taverna Banfi at the Winery is considered the very best restaurant in Tuscany. You can judge with your group the differences between Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. If you go to Pisa, do not miss the chance to go to nearby Bolgheri, home of the wines known as Super Tuscans since they are a blend of Sangiovese and traditional Bordeaux varietals and are some of the most sought after.

Fattoria dei Barbi is among a prestigious group of estates that has played an integral part in writing the history of Italian wine. In fact, the estate is one of only five in Montalcino that have continuously operated for over 100 years. The Colombini family, one of region’s most influential families, founded the estate in 1790, where they have produced wine ever since. The estate is currently owned and managed by the 20th generation heir, Stefano Cinelli Colombini, who carries on constantly seeking innovation through research and the application of new techniques.

The estate, whose name is derived from “Barbo,” a reference to the seashell fossils found throughout the vineyards, received top awards at exhibitions all over Europe since the first vintages and was the first to export Brunello to the United States in 1962.  Today, it  is one of the most widely recognized Brunello bottlings in the world. Riches from the Rothschilds

Château Lafite Rothschild is an estate in the wine-producing village of Pauillac in the Médoc region to the north-west of Bordeaux,  France, owned by members of the Rothschild family since the 19th century. The name Lafite comes from the surname of the La Fite family. Lafite was one of four wine-producing Château of Bordeaux originally awarded First Great Growth status in the 1855 Classification. Since then, it has been a consistent producer of one of the world’s most excellent and expensive red wines.

Also located in the village of Pauillac, Château Mouton Rothschild was originally known as Château Brane-Mouton.  It was renamed by Nathaniel de Rothschild, who was from a different branch of the family, in 1853.  Despite the market prices for the vineyard’s wines equaling that of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild was excluded from First Great Growth status, an act that Baron Philippe de Rothschild referred to as “the monstrous injustice.”  It is widely believed that the exception was made because the vineyard had recently been purchased by an Englishman and was no longer in French ownership!  In 1973, Mouton was elevated to “first growth” status after decades of intense lobbying by its powerful and influential owner, and today enjoys a reputation placing it among the greatest Bordeaux wines.

Includes:

  • 3 – 750 ml 1995 Château Lafite Rothschild; WS 97, “Full bodied, with a solid core of tannins and a long silky finish, concentrated and powerful;” RP 95
  • 1 – 750 ml 1994 Château Mouton Rothschild; WS 91, “Full bodied, with a chewy, ripe fruit scented finish;” RP 91

Delicious Delectable Duckhorn!

Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent almost forty years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.

In 1990, after fifteen years of making word-class Bordeaux varietal wines, Dan and Margaret embraced their growing love of Pinot Noir. Their vision for Goldeneye was simple, though not easy. They wanted to found a winery that could make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Merlots they had pioneered in Napa Valley. For Pinot Noir, they believed that true greatness could be found on the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture where the grape could express varietal purity and an intense sense of place. They found what they were looking for in Anderson Valley. Today, Goldeneye features the region’s preeminent Pinot Noir estate program.

Building on what they accomplished at Goldeneye, the Duckhorn’s founded Migration and released its first vintage in 2001. Embodying the lush elegance of the cool-climate winegrowing, Migration’s exploration of the great Burgundian varietals began in the Anderson Valley where the Duckhorn Wine Company owns 207 vine acres. Specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, winemaker Bo Felton crafts wines that are deeply connected to a specific place or region.

This lot is dinner for ten in your home featuring these fabulous wines. Long-time supporter of Très Bonne Année, Scott Finaly, regional manager for Duckhorn, will be your host for the evening to give a perspective on these wines. The Bricco culinary staff will create and serve a wonderful feast to complement the wines.
