LOT 1801

Small Batch, Big Flavor, All Family

To kick off the 2018 Live Auction in concert with our theme, “It’s all about Family,” we start with a lot that celebrates family winemaking throughout California (and a little bit in France).  These wines represent the best bottlings of the family wineries from which they’re produced.  Each is made in very limited production and is difficult to obtain, even in a current release.  With rare exception, each is rated 90+ points or higher and many are no longer available on the open market. This lot allows you to explore the many and varied AVAs of California and illustrates the compelling effect of terroir.  Mix and match and enjoy the pleasures of the table with your family over many meals.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape – named for the castle built by Pope John XXII during his 14th-century residence in Avignon – is one of the most acclaimed wines of France.  Wine has been produced there in the Southern Rhône region since at least the twelfth century.  The red wine is rich and full-bodied, most often made from the traditional red blend (Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre), although a total of eighteen grape varieties are permitted.  The most prized Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are typically full-bodied, complex and rich with flavors of red fruits, spice and leather.  In white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne predominate, although other varieties are permitted.  The style of the white wines ranges from lean and minerally to oily and rich with flavor notes including almond, star fruit, anise, fennel, honeysuckle and peach.  Both red and white wines have traditionally been packaged in distinctive, heavy dark wine bottles embossed with the papal regalia and insignia.

Superb Single Vineyard Barolos

Barolo is a red wine produced in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape and is considered one of Italy’s greatest wines.  Barolo is often described as having the aromas of tar and roses, and the wines are noted for their ability to age and usually take on a rust red tinge as they mature. Barolo needs to be aged for at least 38 months after the harvest before release, of which at least 18 months must be in wood.  When subjected to aging of at least five years before release, the wine can be labeled a Riserva.

Viberti La Volta is a limited-production Barolo Riserva produced only in the best vintages from the estate-owned La Volta vineyard.  A big wine with elegant notes of preserved fruit accented by aromas of spices, underbrush, and licorice.  Extensively aged in wood for 46 months, followed by 3 months in stainless steel tanks, and finally cellared in bottle at the winery for 12 months, this wine will gracefully age over 12+ years with proper storage.

Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato is a single vineyard Barolo made from grapes sourced from three different plots of the famous family-owned Ornato Estate in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the top vineyards in the whole Barolo area. Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato is more modern in style than traditional Barolo, but still true to its roots. The characteristics of the soil, the microclimate and favorable exposure allows the grapes to become extremely rich, with great soft tannins.  It is only produced in outstanding years.  After pressing, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged in mid-toasted French oak for 36 months.

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml 2010 Viberti La Volta Barolo Riserva, DOCG in OWC – WE 93
  • 12 – 750 ml 2012 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato DOCG in 2 OWC

Big Bottles for a Big Party

Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. His overwhelming success will forever be reflected in the improved quality of wine from California and the world over. “The distinct flavor and texture profile of Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District has the remarkable ability to reflect the subtle nuances of each vintage while always expressing the unique terroir of the region. It is both powerful and silky smooth as it delivers its cassis, black plum, tobacco, tar and orange zest flavors in a stream-lined flow across the palate. We are always delighted with the appellation’s natural ability to provide focused flavors in such an elegantly rich sip.” – Genevieve Janssens, Winemaker

In 1971, Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner and his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner asked their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner, who had just graduated from high school, if he would be interested in joining them in starting up a winery. If Chuck declined the offer, Charlie and Lorna were planning to sell their ranch in Napa Valley and move to Australia. Chuck accepted his parents’ offer to launch the winery, Caymus Vineyards.  The Wagners produced their first vintage in 1972, consisting of 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then, Caymus has focused their efforts in the production of quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Today’s production is 65,000 cases.  Caymus Vineyards remains 100% family-owned by the Wagners. Charlie, Lorna Belle, and Chuck worked together as a remarkable team for over 30 years building Caymus Cabernet. Today, Chuck, his two sons, Charlie and Joe, and one daughter, Jenny, have joined the family team. Farming grapes remain the priority with the family farming about 350 acres of choice Napa Valley land.  The Wagners took the name Caymus from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, given to George Yount in 1836, which encompassed what eventually became the town of Rutherford and much of the surrounding area.

In 1984, H. William Harlan, a real estate developer and Napa Valley resort owner, purchased a property west of Martha’s Vineyard in Oakville, and started viticulture, with the ambition to “create a first growth wine.”  Harlan Estate wine has garnered high praise and accolades from wine critics all over the world and has achieved status as a “cult wine.”  In 2004, Harlan founded the Napa Valley Reserve, a members-only winery and vineyard project, in which participants pay an initiation fee and monthly dues to create minimum of 150 bottles and up to 900 bottles per year under Harlan’s guidance.   Napa Valley Reserve has been described as “the nation’s first wine country club.”  With a client base that includes actors, sports stars, and affluent professional workers, the establishment is an invitation-only club, and its wines are as highly sought after as Harlan Estate itself!

Riedel Exquisite Glassware – Grape Varietal Specific

This exquisite and beautiful glassware is an essential for the wine connoisseur. When developing a glass, Riedel’s research team realized that the shape of the glass had a positive impact on the perception of the bouquet and flavour of the wine.  With the help and support of the world’s greatest palates, Riedel has learned that the same wine displays completely different characteristics when served in a variety of glasses. The differences are so great that experienced connoisseurs were made to believe that they were tasting different wines. The grape variety is the key factor in determining the relationship between fruit, acidity, tannin and alcohol. Riedel created shapes in which the wine, vinified from specific grape varieties, seemed to improve. Riedel recognizes the complex role that size and shape play in conveying the message of a fine wine. The height of the stem and the width of the base are part of the glass design.  Grape varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of 3 variables: shape, size and rim diameter; to translate the “message” of the wine to the human senses.

Fond of Bond?

Sourced from select hillside estates, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines of BOND vividly demonstrate the range of Napa Valley’s finest terroirs. From the more than eighty vineyards the producers have worked with over the past quarter century, they have slowly and vigilantly selected five sites. BOND became their covenant and shared commitment to produce only the best expression of the land. They feel that these select properties define the ‘Grand Crus’ of Napa Valley. These small hillside Cabernet vineyards, ranging in size from 7 to 11 acres, became the basis for the wines of BOND.

Melbury originates from a spectacular property on the slopes north of Lake Hennessey.  The consistent hallmarks of Melbury have been plush red fruits (currants, Bing cherries), redolent with spice and the scent of violets. Elegance and a supple texture define the structure of this wine.  Pluribus, which debuted in the 2003 vintage, is defined as a bold, rich and concentrated wine; elements of dark plum, roasted coffee, and scents of cedar are inherent throughout the vintages.  St. Eden, which appeared first in the 2001 vintage, reliably shows great focus, an opulent “sweet” center and notes of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, and roasted herbs.  Vecina’s other hallmarks are blackberry fruit, with wild forest floor and mineral associated overtones.

Includes:

In original wooden case:

  • 1 – 1.5 L 2004 Bond Melbury Red Wine
  • 1 – 1.5 L 2004 Bond Pluribus Red Wine
  • 1 – 1.5 L 2004 Bond St. Eden Red Wine

Good Wine Begins on the Vine

Napa native Tom Gamble is a farmer first.  “My most lasting memory of childhood is dirt.  Playing in dirt.  Walking in dust behind the tractor.  Wearing out the seats in my jeans sliding down shale hillsides.  Wandering aimlessly on foot, horseback and mini-bike all summer long, enjoying everything the dirt and our climate gives to life.”    His boyhood days often began before sunrise herding cattle, working irrigation lines and emulating older ranchers and farmers.  Tom has always held fast to his Napa roots where the Gamble family arrived, four generations ago.  Tom continued the family legacy, planting his first vineyard in 1981 and he continues to farm to this day.  Gamble Family Vineyards is his opportunity to share with future generations, the hard work of generations past.

Quality Cabs and Chards

This lot presents a magnificent collection of some of the finest California Cabernets and Chardonnays, the grapes that put California on the world wine map. Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 and started with “two tons of zinfandel and not much else.”  It has since grown into a highly respected winery producing numerous varietals and blends.   The 2005 Mercury Head Cabernet is described as “elegant, intense and vibrant with a tinge of earthy, leathery scents giving a hint of Zinfandel.” Beaulieu Vineyard was established in the early 20th century and in 1940 released the first vintage of Private Reserve named in honor of the founder, George de Latour. The wine was destined to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet.  Textbook specializes in crafting small lots of exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon from some of Napa Valley’s finest locales. Handmade in every way, they express the best of Napa Valley.  Knights Bridge was founded by friends who are united in their quest for excellence, their deep respect for nature and their abiding love of wine and food.  Their Cabernets from To Kalon and Dr. Crane Vineyards showcase some of the most highly praised fruit in the valley.

Marc Aubert, recently featured in a cover story in Wine Spectator magazine, has achieved international status with his Chardonnays, most of which are from select single vineyards located in both Napa and Sonoma Counties.  Six unique bottlings are included in this lot.

Riedel Exquisite Glassware – Grape Varietal Specific

This exquisite and beautiful glassware is an essential for the wine connoisseur. With the help and support of the world’s greatest palates, Riedel has learned that the same wine displays completely different characteristics when served in a variety of glasses. The grape variety is the key factor in determining the relationship between fruit, acidity, tannin and alcohol. Riedel created shapes in which the wine, vinified from specific grape varieties, seemed to improve. Grape varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls to translate the “message” of the wine to the human senses.

Cape Kontrei Gastronomy

The Malan family’s winemaking dates back to 1688 when the first Malan arrived in South Africa.  As a French Huguenot, he was given land at the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch to plant new vineyards.  Soon thereafter, he moved to the Stellenbosch region, which quickly became famous for the quality of its grapes. In 1953, one of his descendants, Frans Malan, planted vineyards on De Hoop, in the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain outside Stellenbosch.  Endowed with quintessential terroir, this farm subsequently became the nucleus of the Simonsig Wine Estate.  1968 saw the introduction of his first wines, sold under the Simonsig Estate label – literally translated meaning Simon’s View – named after the spectacular views of the Simonsberg Mountain.

Today, Simonsig vineyards comprise 211 hectares producing an extensive range of formidable red, white and sparkling wines.  Pioneers in wine excellence, the estate is acknowledged as one of the most reputable private wine producers in South Africa. Simonsig enjoys an impressive record of prestigious local and international awards.

Not Just a “Port” in a Storm

With its mild climate, 3000 hours of sunshine per year and 850 kilometers of splendid beaches bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the perfect holiday destination all year round.  This is a country that has the oldest borders in Europe, with an exceptional range of different landscapes just a short distance away, lots of leisure activities and a unique cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect harmony. Its superb cuisine, fine wines and hospitable people make this a tourist paradise of the highest quality.

The trip will begin in Lisbon and then you will travel to Alentejo, where you will visit Herdade Sao Miguel.  It is a family-owned winery which started in 1997 and strives to produce wines that reflect quality and vigor, values that are promoted in their family work. Experience their dedication to the breeding and conservation of local species in extinction such as the ‘Mirandela’ donkey and the ‘Garrano’ horses of Gerês that in the old times were great agriculture tools and now are in extinction due to the takeover of automation in agriculture.

You will then visit Quinta do Vila Nova. The Lencastre family is of royal Portuguese lineage – descended from Antonio Pinot Garces Mandureira, who was named the First Barão da Varzea do Douro by Portugal’s Queen Maria II on July 16, 1846. The family’s royal residence is Vila Nova, near the town of Penafiel, close to the eastern border in Portugal’s Vinho Verde wine region ‐‐ about a 30 minute drive east from Oporto. The land has been in the family since the 12th Century, and the only remnant of that time is an ivy‐covered stone tower, now totally surrounded by Vila Nova (new house), that was built in the 1700’s.

You will end your tour of Portugal visiting Quinta Do Vallado. Quinta do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous “Quintas” in the Douro Valley.  It once belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendants. It lies on both banks of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River, near its mouth, close to the town of Peso da Régua. You will visit two of the winery’s amazing hotel properties.
Includes:

  • Two rooms for two nights in Alentejo at Alentejo Marmois Hotel
  • Two rooms for two nights at Casas do Telhado in Penafiel
  • Two rooms for two nights Quinta do Vallado in Duoro Valley
  • Two rooms for one night at Casa do Rio Hotel and Spa

Magical Margaux!

Château Margaux is considered one of the finest wine estates in the world, with its legendary bottle of 1787 alone insured for more than $225,000. One of only four first growths in the 1855 classification of Medoc wines, Château Margaux (previously known as La Mothe de Margaux) is owned and operated by a Greek family from the Peloponnese. Born in Patras in 1915, André Mentzelopoulos, son of a hotelier, decided to leave home and become a citizen of the world. In 1977, just as Bordeaux wines were emerging from a serious economic and qualitative crisis, the entrepreneur bought the Château Margaux wine estate, which architect Louis Combes had designed in a style inspired by Greece. The ionic architecture filled André with pride and reminded him of Greece.

Located in the commune of Margaux on the left bank of the Garonne estuary in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, the estate has 82 hectares under vine, with Cabernet Sauvignon inevitably dominant (75 percent) with 20 percent Merlot making up most of the rest, along with a smattering of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Under the guidance of renowned oenologist Emile Peynaud, Mentzelopoulos revitalized the Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux. Since André’s death in 1980, the estate has been run by his daughter Corinne, who stated, “Owning and running Château Margaux is a unique privilege, and I always keep in mind that it has been there for five centuries and it will live way after me and my family.”  Her daughter Alexandra now serves as the winery’s deputy general manager.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 1982 Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe
WS 94 “Firm and rich” – RP 99 “opulent and decadent.”
  • 1 – 750 ml 1983 Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe

Quintessentially South America

Located in the Southern Cone of the American Continent, with a population of 42 million inhabitants and a territory that is four times larger than France, Argentina is one of the world’s nature reserves. Privileged with outstanding natural richness and extraordinarily diverse landscapes, Argentina boasts high mountains and plains, lush vegetation and extreme deserts, forests and steppes, glaciers and waterfalls.

Bodegas Valentin Bianchi is a fourth generation, family-owned Argentine winery founded in 1928, and is among the oldest Argentine wineries still owned by the same family.   It is renowned for traditional Argentine wines.  After almost a century of hard work and success, Valentin Bianchi still shines with the legacy of the family, seeking to keep alive its passion for wine, crossing borders via export to most of the world, and constantly exploring new horizons, on both the winemaking and marketing sides of the company.  You will join Silvio Alberto, Bianchi’s Winemaker and Federico Nino, the winery’s export manager first in Buenos Aires where you experience first-hand the culture of Argentina. Then you will fly to Mendoza to immerse yourself into the wine culture of Bianchi and Pascual Toso.

Founded in 1890, Pascual Toso remains faithful to its principles: Tradition, Authenticity and Innovation. Pascual Toso reflects the authentic essence of Las Barrancas, the location of its single‐vineyard estate and a region of Mendoza characterized by premium soils. Its terroir ‐ driven profile makes Pascual Toso ideal for wine aficionados. At the beginning of the twentieth century, our founder decided to expand the business and acquired 988 acres of vineyards in Maipú, which he correctly believed contained the best quality grapes in the region. At his estate “Las Barrancas”, he built another winery and 100% of their wines are estate produced and bottled. Today, the Maipú area is considered by technicians to be the prime wine ‐ producing area not only in the region of Mendoza, but throughout Argentina.

Then off to Chile flying high over the Andes. The path taken by Chile to arrive where it is today as one of the principal wine exporters in the world, started almost at the same time as it was conquered by the Spanish. Owners of a privileged climate, Chilean land became an exceptional place to cultivate the grape seeds brought from Europe.

You will travel to Matetic vineyards and their hotel La Casona in the heart of Casablanca. See the dream realized of the Matetic family to create a winery that works alongside Mother Nature to produce wines that are organic and follow Biodynamic principals. Fabulous French Collection

While many varieties of excellent wine come from France, perhaps the two best known and loved are Champagne and Bordeaux.  Champagne is widely accepted as producing the world’s best sparkling wine, the standard to which all others are compared.  Within the wines of Champagne, there is a huge range of quality and prestige.  At the top are Vintage-dated bottles from legendary sites and renowned producers.  One such is the Champagne included in this lot, Salon Le Mesnil Brut Blanc de Blanc.  Champagne Salon was founded by Eugène Aimé Salon in the early 20th century. Salon was convinced that the Chardonnay grapes from the Le Mesnil-sur-Oger vineyards could produce wine with favorable levels of finesse and elegance without the need to add Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier.  The first commercial vintage of Champagne Salon was in 1921 and by 2006, the house had released only 37 vintages under the Salon label.  It is regarded as one of the greatest Champagnes on the market.

Red wine has been made in Bordeaux since medieval times, most recently from blends of the well-known grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  In 1855, the red wines of the Medoc region were classified into five categories, or “growths”, reflecting the quality and purchase price of each chateau’s product.  This classification is still largely valid today, and wines of the first and second growths are highly desirable and expensive, especially in excellent vintages.  The 1990 Chateau Montrose, a second-growth Cabernet-dominant blend, received enthusiastic endorsement from reviewers, including a 100 point score from Robert Parker.  Bottles are exceedingly rare today.  Another sub-region of Bordeaux, St. Emilion, also had its wines classified by quality, with Chateau Cheval Blanc at the top of the list.  Cheval Blanc produces the most famous Cabernet Franc-based wine in the world and present director Pierre Lurton is among the most talented winemakers working in Bordeaux today. Cheval Blanc requires a minimum 10 years of bottle age and the best vintages can last for 50 years or more.

Riedel Exquisite Glassware – Grape Varietal Specific

This exquisite and beautiful glassware is an essential for the wine connoisseur. Riedel’s research team realized that the shape of the glass had a positive impact on the perception of the bouquet and flavor of the wine.  These red wine glasses are ideal for multi-course meals or comparative wine tasting of several different varietals and blends.

It’s About Passion!

When William and Jane Ballentine bought a nineteenth century ghost winery in St. Helena in 1999, little did they know it would take them years to open its doors which had been shuttered since Prohibition. They enthusiastically began an extensive renovation of the 1873 stone wine cellar on the bottom level of the historic three-story building while they moved their family into the top two floors. Throughout the project they began to uncover the incredibly rich history of the property and it became their goal to restore the original integrity of the winery and incorporate modern winemaking techniques. The property was deemed so important to the history of the Napa Valley that the county wrote a special historic ordinance to allow it to be reopened as a winery. By 2004, they had completed restoration and opened as a fully operational winery. In honor of tradition, they named it William Cole for ‘William’ and their son Cole and dedicated their Cabernet Sauvignon, Cuvée Claire, to their daughter ‘Claire’.

“It’s about passion.” – William Ballentine, Winemaker.  The fourth generation in his family to make wine in Napa Valley, William Ballentine, Jr. has winemaking in his blood. Growing up among the vines, tending grapes and making wine is the dominant theme of William’s life, a legacy handed down to him by his father, grandfather and great grandfather. “Personally hand tending the vines and tilling the land give me the ultimate connection to the finished product.”

“Our winemaking practices are gentle and slow. The timing of everything in the creation of our wine is based on taste. There is no hard and fast schedule and no rush in the winemaking process. For our Cabernet, each distinct vineyard block is harvested, fermented and barrel aged separately. By isolating each of the lots and dealing with them independently and individually, I am able to maximize the various qualities that each one has to offer. These special properties resonate in the wines with layers of complexity and dimension. My goal in the vineyard is to celebrate the distinct qualities that each of the varying soil types has to offer.”

Sweet Dreams Are Made of These

Sauternes is a French sweet wine from the Graves section in Bordeaux. Sauternes is made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes that have been affected by Botrytis Cinerea, also known as noble rot. This causes the grapes to become partially raisined, resulting in concentrated and distinctively flavored wines. Due to its climate, Sauternes is one of the few wine regions where infection with noble rot is a frequent occurrence. Wines from Sauternes, especially the Premier Cru Supérieur estate Château d’Yquem, can be very expensive, due largely to the very high cost of production. Barsac lies within Sauternes, and is entitled to use either name.  Sauternes is considered by many to be the ultimate dessert wine.

Another great choice for a sweet ending to a meal is Port.  It is a fortified wine produced with distilled grape spirits exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal.  It is typically a sweet, red wine, often served as a dessert wine, though it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties.  Over a hundred varieties of grapes are sanctioned for Port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.  While there are quite a few varieties of Port, based on aging time in wood or bottle, the best known and most highly regarded is Vintage Port.  It is made entirely from the grapes of a declared vintage year.  The decision on whether to declare a vintage is made early in the second year following the harvest.  Much of the complex character of aged Vintage Port comes from continued slow evolution in the bottle.  Vintage Port typically requires a period of settling before decanting and pouring.

Both Sauternes and Vintage Port are known for long aging potential, gradually evolving and improving for decades, even over a century or more!  This lot includes priceless examples from some of the best vintages of the twentieth century.

Includes:

  • 1 – 750 ml 1961 Chateau Coutet Barsac Grand Cru de Sauternes

Great Wines from Around the World

Silver Oak Cellars is a family-owned, California winery dedicated to producing only Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak was established in 1972 and quickly acquired a reputation as one of California’s finest accompaniments to steak house fare. Fruit for Silver Oak’s Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from estate-owned vineyards in the Napa and Alexander Valleys. The backbone of Silver Oak’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from their 113 acre Soda Canyon Ranch Vineyard in the Napa Valley. From Wine Spectator’s James Laube: “It’s not often that a venerable 40-year-old winery suddenly makes one of its best wines, perhaps in decades. But that may be the case with Silver Oak and its 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Apalta is a region within Chile’s Colchagua Valley which focuses on red wine production. Apalta wines are highly sought-after and are most often made from the classic varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Syrah.  Casa Lapostolle’s flagship wine, the single-vineyard Clos Apalta, is among the most impressive wines produced in South America.  Its base is always two thirds Carmenere complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, whose proportions might vary with each vintage.

Bruno Giacosa has been described as the “Genius of Neive.” A traditionalist with the Nebbiolo grape, his wines are considered among Italy’s first growths. All his wines are carefully handcrafted with particular attention to detail and exacting standards. He will not bottle any wine that does not meet his extremely high quality standards.   His Barolos typically exhibit aromas of smoke, earth, white truffles, black fruits, licorice, and floral scents, with silky texture and fine tannins.

From the Heart of Napa to You

The grapes for our Cairo Cabernet are grown on our 3.3 acre Lincoln Ranch vineyard in the center of the Oakville appellation.   The plants are all Clone 337, a French clone from Bordeaux which yields tiny berries of exceptional color and flavor intensity.  The heavier valley floor soils give us full and extremely silky tannins.  Reminiscent of blueberry cobbler, leather, root beer, cream soda and cardamom. Flavors of fennel, blackcurrant, allspice, earth and black cherry abound.  This wine has an intriguing sweet-savory balance, think salty chocolate or lavender and juniper rubbed leg of lamb.  Delicious in its youth this big round wine will continue to develop and evolve over fifteen years.  Due to small production, Cairo Cabernet Sauvignon is allocated to Gamble Family Vineyards members.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is best known for its flagship blend of red Bordeaux varietals, “Insignia”, first produced in 1974.  Awarded the WINE SPECTATOR MAGAZINE “Wine of the Year” in 2005, Insignia is widely regarded as a qualitative benchmark for California winemaking.  Enjoy this vertical collection of three outstanding vintages with stellar ratings.

Includes:

  • 1 – 6 L Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 2010 – WS 92
  • 1 – 1.5 L Gamble Family Vineyards “Cairo” Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009
    Only 60 magnums produced – WS 90
  • 1 – 750 ml Joseph Phelps “Insignia,” Red Wine Napa Valley, 2013 – RP / WA – 97-100

Dinner “Down Under” with Henry’s Drive Vignerons

Named after the proprietor of the 19th century mail coach service that once ran through their property, Henry’s Drive Vignerons is the wine operation established by Kim Longbottom and her late husband Mark. During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of southeastern South Australia, only horse drawn coaches provided the transit of mail and passengers. The coach drivers reigned supreme on top of their coaches and won the respect and admiration of their passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a certain Henry John Hill. His operation drove directly through a property, owned more recently by the Longbottom family. Kim Longbottom, who hails from New Zealand’s famous wine producing region of Marlborough, has winemaking in her blood. Her late husband, Mark was a third-generation pastoralist and had a natural affinity with the land. Together, they shared a passion for viticulture and winemaking – a passion that is central to the business. In 1992, Kim and Mark carefully selected sections of their properties for vine planting. Six years later, a dream was realized with the release of their first wines, coinciding with another life-affirming moment—the birth of their daughter, Margo.

To assure you and your guests arrive home safely, Unique Limousine and The Salinger Family will provide luxury transportation for the evening.

Includes:

  • Hors d’oeuvres and multi-course dinner for ten in your home hosted by Kim Longbottom, Proprietor of Henry’s Drive

LOT 2862

Trifecta

This lot represents three noble grapes from three renowned producers from three revered regions.  Treat yourself to an assortment of regions and flavors sure to please for any occasion or mood.

Beringer Vineyards is one of the landmark vineyards in the Napa Valley and all of the world.  The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is considered the pinnacle of the Beringer portfolio.  The 2013 is an exceptional expression of Cabernet from one of the best vintages in years.  It yields enticing aromas of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, fresh tobacco, brown spice and sweet mint which are profound in the glass.  Grapes were sourced form Howell Mountain (81%), St. Helena (11%), with the balance from Calistoga and Mt. Veeder.  RP/WA-97 Pts.,WS-93 Pts.  Vinous 95 Pts.

Domaine de Courcel has been owned by the same family for over 400 years.  The Grand Cru de Epenots is a monopoly of the Domaine and one of the four Premier Crus of Pommard.  The plot of 4.89 hectares is located north of Pommard at the start of the slope and is east facing.  The soil is rich in clay and limestone, strewn with limestone rocks.  The vines are 60 years old and produce elegant wines with aromas of red berries and nuances of ripe peach and apricot.  The fine tannins are numerous but integrated creating an aromatic wine with a smooth finish.  Vinous 92 Pts.

Castello Banfi has been a pioneer in the research of clones of Sangiovese with the goal of producing a more outstanding quality Brunello.  One taste of the 2011 and you’ll agree they have achieved their goal.

Brunello di Montalcino was Italy’s first wine to be accorded DOCG status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and proclivity for aging.  This wine is released in its 5th year after harvest after having been aged a minimum of 4 years.  You’ll love the complex aromas of raspberries, strawberries and minerals.  It is full bodied with fine, refined tannins with currant, blueberry and dark cherry flavors wrapped up in a tannic structure.  This special ARTISTS LOT was bottled in very limited quantity with only 100 6 packs produced for the world.  There are 13 known remaining in the US.

Includes:

  • 6 – 750 ml Courcel Pommard Epenots 1er Cru 2013 – Vinous 92 Pts.
  • 6 – 750 ml Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon “Private Reserve” Napa Valley 2013
