Re-imagine KidsPlace
The Gary and Sylvie St. Hilaire Gallery

In celebration of our twentieth anniversary, Whitaker Center is proud to share that KidsPlace, located in the Harsco Science Center, will be reimagined to include newly-designed and refurbished exhibits for children ages up to five years old. This renovation project is taking place from October 7 through November 4, 2019.

The newly renovated KidsPlace is being named in honor of Gary and Sylvie St. Hilaire to recognize their philanthropic spirit. Gary and Sylvie’s leadership and generosity has inspired others to invest in Whitaker Center, our future, and our mission. It is our honor to recognize their commitment to Whitaker Center, the community, and STEAM education in a place where children learn, laugh, and grow together.

Whitaker Center has partnered with Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA to design and construct the new exhibits in three phases. The first phase of the renovated space will include a beautiful gated “Baby Garden” area, a storybook tree, a fishin’ hole, and a picnic area, which is scheduled to open on November 5, 2019. The second phase of the project will include a revamped ambulance and oversized operation game scheduled to open in the spring of 2020.

By contributing to tonight’s Fund A Need donation drive, you will be funding the future of Pre-K STEM learning in Harrisburg by investing in our littlest learners. Your donation to this specific project will go towards refurbishing fees, the new exhibits designed by Carnegie Science Center, installation, and overall décor of the second phase of KidsPlace.

LET’S START WITH SOME BILLECART BUBBLY

“In the 1950s my grandmother set aside this park-like space next to our house in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ with vines, flowers and fruit trees, for our enjoyment. Realizing this outstanding terroir’s potential, my family decided to plant the first Pinot Noir vines here in 1964. We tried using the Pinot Noir to make white wine in small Burgundy barrels: an outstanding champagne was about to be born. After several years of painstakingly tending the vines, the 1995 harvest, the first year of this unique cuvée, was remarkable. We called it Le Clos Saint-Hilaire after the patron saint of the church in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. No more than 3,500 to 7,500 bottles are produced each year and each is individually numbered.”

97 points Decanter

Clos St-Hilaire is the walled 1ha vineyard behind the founders’ house in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, where the tuffeau soil was planted in 1964 to Pinot Noir. This sustainably farmed vineyard is ploughed by horses, and sheep graze here after harvest. The wine is 100% vinified in the house’s best old oak casks and aged for 15 years on its lees with no dosage. Made only in exceptional vintages, the 1999 follows on from the 1995, 1996 and 1998, and yields were tiny – just 6,750 bottles in 1999, all individually numbered. It has a very overt nose of the Clos’ characteristic old-rose scent, along with orange blossom, ripe nectarine, toasted almonds and honeyed apricots. It’s intense and concentrated on the palate, showing mature sous bois, nougat and spiced apple compote alongside balancing acidity. Mathieu Roland-Billecart says the upcoming 2002 release, which will be disgorged at the end of June 2018 and on the market in early 2019, is even more ‘super-charged’ than the 1999. A great match for truffles. (TG)   (5/2018)

96 points Vinous

Billecart’s 1999 Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is exotic and beguiling. Constantly changing in the glass, the 1999 offers exquisite aromatics, silky and a real sense of underlying phenolic structure. Crushed rose petals, licorice, smoke, game and tobacco add nuance as the wine opens up. With time in the glass, the personality of these Pinot vines becomes more and more expressive. The 1999 was bottled with no dosage, but that would be impossible to ascertain in a blind tasting. (AG)   (7/2015)

BEST IN SHOW BORDEAUX

The wine regions of Bordeaux include a large number of wine growing areas lying within the Gironde department of Aquitaine. The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuary into a Left Bank area which includes the Médoc and Graves and a Right Bank area which includes Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Lalande Pomerol, and Fronsac. The Médoc is itself divided into sub-regions, among the best known of which are St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St.-Julien and Margaux. Graves includes the sub-regions of Pessac-Léognan and Sauternes, the latter known best for its sweet white dessert wines. All of these regions have their own appellations and are governed by Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée laws which dictate the permissible grape varieties, alcohol level, methods of pruning and picking, density of planting and appropriate yields as well as various winemaking techniques. The permissible grape varieties in red Bordeaux are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. A rule of thumb is that the Left Bank is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon based with the Right Bank being more Merlot based, although the ratio varies considerably among different wineries. Most red blends feature some Merlot, and indeed more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon is grown throughout the region.

Red wines from Bordeaux are medium- to full-bodied with aromas of black currant, plums, and earthy notes of wet gravel or pencil lead. When you taste the wines, they burst with mineral and fruit notes that lead into prickly, savory, mouth-drying tannins. The tannins are often high enough that wines will age for several decades.

In 1855, in preparation for an International Exposition, the best red wines of the Médoc were classified into five categories, or “growths,” reflecting their quality and value in the markets of the day. With just two modifications over the years, this classification remains valid and meaningful today, with wines of the first and second growth categories commanding high esteem and high prices. Most of the other red wine regions have since instituted their own classification systems, using terms such as Grand Cru or Cru Exceptionnel. Indeed some of the wines of Graves, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol can compete with the Médoc wines for international prominence and critical acclaim.

This lot contains highly rated wines from several of the subregions of Bordeaux, including some named in the 1855 Médoc classification and others from lesser known appellations. All have at least 10 years of aging and should be at optimal drinkability. This is a truly unique opportunity to experience some of the finest the region can offer!

BIONDI-SANTI AND VOLPAIA – OH MY A

Two of the most renowned producers in Tuscany pair up to bring you this fantastic Tuscan Feast hosted by decorated sommelier William Davies. Bill will expertly guide you through the ethereal wines that have become known as benchmark wines for the Tuscan region. Under the watchful direction of Executive Chef John Reis and Anthony Bianco, the culinary team from 1700 Degrees steakhouse will surprise and delight with their own rendition of authentic Tuscan cuisine with a modern twist.

William Davis started in restaurants at the tender age of 15 in the Dallas – Ft. Worth area. A career in economics was not as fun as working the floor, so he stayed in the hospitality industry both in Texas and Denver, Colorado. He realized that wine and spirits was his passion, and when he sat for his Introductory Exam and Course with the Court of Master Sommeliers over 15 years ago, his ‘wine bug’ was set in stone. In 2004, he decided that a full-time career with Charmer-Sunbelt in Colorado was necessary to pursue a greater understanding of the grape, and received the Certified Specialist of Wine, the Certified Specialist of Spirits, and the highest certification from the Society of Wine Educators, the title of Certified Wine Educator (CWE). Restaurants were still ‘in his blood’, and the dedication that sommeliers give to their craft is a vital part of bringing wine to the consumer, so he passed the Certified and Advanced Sommelier exams in 2007 and 2008 (on his first try), and is working to achieve his MS with the Court of Master Sommeliers. The academic approach to wine and spirits also interests him, and he obtained the Advanced Certification with the Wine and Spirits Education Trust in 2010, and is studying for the WSET Diploma. If that isn’t enough, he is a member of the Guild of Sommeliers, and was the 2 time Regional Champion in the Central (2012) and Central-Great Lakes (2013) of Top SOMM, a competition to find the best sommelier in the United States. As a co-host of Wine Guys Radio and TV from 2008 to 2012, he decided to focus on the consumer in late 2012 by introducing Terroir Radio to teach, educate, and mentor industry folk including retail buyers and sommeliers, and share the love of wine to all. Currently he is the Director of Education for Wilson Daniels, one of the leading importers and marketers of wines and spirits in the United States. He has led seminars and moderated events across the country, including Santa Fe Wine and Chile, Taste of Vail, the Denver International Wine Festival, the James Beard Foundations’ Cruise Series, and the Park City Food and Wine Classic. Sitting with winemakers and traveling the wine world is essential to his continued growth. After all, having a glass of vino with the most interesting people on earth doesn’t hurt!

DUCKHORN CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent almost forty years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.

In 1990, after fifteen years of making word-class Bordeaux varietal wines, Dan and Margaret embraced their growing love of Pinot Noir. Their vision for Goldeneye was simple, though not easy. They wanted to found a winery that could make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Merlots they had pioneered in Napa Valley. For Pinot Noir, they believed that true greatness could be found on the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture where the grape could express varietal purity and an intense sense of place. They found what they were looking for in Anderson Valley. Today, Goldeneye features the region’s preeminent Pinot Noir estate program.

Building on what they accomplished at Goldeneye, the Duckhorn’s founded Migration and released its first vintage in 2001. Embodying the lush elegance of the cool-climate winegrowing, Migration’s exploration of the great Burgundian varietals began in the Anderson Valley where the Duckhorn Wine Company owns 207 vine acres. Specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, winemaker Bo Felton crafts wines that are deeply connected to a specific place or region.

Includes:
• 1 – 3 L 2015 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot
• 6 – 750 ml 2016 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot
• 2 – 1.5 L 2013 Duckhorn Discussion

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’!

Discover the Central Coast of California! From the epic grandeur of Big Sur to the Mediterranean-style stretch of Santa Barbara coastline nicknamed “the American Riviera,” this region of picturesque hamlets, jagged sea cliffs, and rolling wine country has long attracted—not surprisingly—writers and artists mesmerized by its dreamlike beauty.

Few places on earth can live up to their own mythology, but Monterey is a notable exception. No matter what you’ve heard or seen in feature films, nothing can prepare you for the jaw-dropping beauty along Monterey’s fabled coast and village-like pedestrian thoroughfares. John Steinbeck was a frequent visitor, and drew considerable inspiration from area landmarks including Cannery Row, which he helped to immortalize in his novel of the same name. Today, restaurants, boutiques and attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium have helped make Monterey a favorite destination for visitors from around the world.

Every city has that one “can’t miss restaurant,” where celebrities feel at home and every other guest feels like a celebrity. Since October 2, 1968, The Sardine Factory’s cachet has made dining in the historic Cannery Row setting a tradition for world leaders, sports heroes and entertainment icons. Their award-winning chefs prepare delectable creations of fresh, sustainable seafood and USDA Prime & Dry Aged Beef. They are a perennial winner of the AAA Four Diamond Award and the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence.

When The Sardine Factory opened, Cannery Row was a run-down and forgotten piece of Monterey on the wrong side of the tracks, but owners Ted Balestreri and Bert Cutino saw potential. “Everyone thought we were nuts but it was affordable, that was the key word.” says Ted Balestreri as he reflects back to that time. Both experienced restaurant managers, Balestreri and Cutino had the skills to build a successful restaurant. Over the years, the Sardine Factory added dining rooms including the beautiful Conservatory and impressive Wine Cellar, expanding its 72 seats to 250 seats. Not only did the Sardine Factory set the bar for fine dining on California’s central coast, the restaurant was one of the first in America to develop an impressive and legendary wine list. With the assistance of Fred Dame, Master Sommelier and winner of the 1984 Krug Cup, the restaurant’s wine list became and still is one of the most awarded wine lists in America. It now features more than 1,800 labels and 32,000 bottles, making it one of the most extensive wine lists in the world.

Monterey offers iconic California experiences. Experience the top road trip in the United States as you wind along the breathtaking Big Sur coastline on Highway One. Explore the shops and attractions of iconic Cannery Row. Monterey County has something special for everyone.

MORE THAN A PAIR OF DUCKS!

This lot is dinner for ten in your home featuring these fabulous wines. Long-time supporter of Très Bonne Année, Scott Finaly, regional manager for Duckhorn, will be your host for the evening to give a perspective on these wines. The Hilton’s 1700 Degrees culinary staff will create and serve a wonderful feast to complement the wines.

Includes:
• Tutorial tasting of the Duckhorn portfolio to include wines from Goldeneye, Migration, Kosta Browne, Duckhorn, Parradux and Canvasback hosted by Scott Finaly of Duckhorn

RAISE YOUR GLASS IN CHAMPAGNE

The Champagne region of France is one of the most heavily praised and restricted wine regions on Earth. Located just north of Paris, it produces the worlds’ most famous and celebrated sparkling wines named after the region in which it is grown. One of the most beautiful areas of France, Champagne is also known as one of the main gastronomic centers. Enjoy the legacy of its glorious past, its rich traditions, and taste some of the most celebrated and festive wines.

Or, you can simply order from the hotel’s wine cellar, which boasts no fewer than 220 exceptional brut and rosé vintages and crus. A perfect place to raise your glass is on the terrace, overlooking vines that extend as far as the eye can see.

ITALIAN WINE ROYALTY

Join Kim and Bill Kohl as they graciously open their home for an evening of seductive indulgence. Your senses will be alive as the intimate gathering unfolds. The conversation at your private party will be elevated by the world class wines swirled in your glass, the exquisite foods prepared and the rich hedonistic aroma of cigars smoked among friends. You will be entertained as Bill, with the assistance of the Hilton 1700 Degrees staff, presents the elegant feast. Dinner courses will be artfully paired with the exquisite wines of Angelo Gaja and Piero Antinori.

Unarguably, Angelo Gaja is the most renowned winemaker in Italy today! The stellar wines of Angelo Gaja hail from the Piedmont region of Italy which sits at the base of the Alps. The ancient Piedmontese city of Alba, south of Turin, boasts the vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco. Made from the Nebbiolo grapes, the wines are marvelously complex, almost a work of art. These wines are so prestigious that by unanimous consent they were the first to receive the DOCG classification. Angelo Gaja is the producer who best symbolizes Barbaresco. He has become famous throughout the world. Many think that Gaja is the most gifted wine producer of his generation. Since its inception, the Gaja Winery has continuously evolved in ways that have always focused on meticulous care of and attention to the quality of its wines. Food is an expression of love and passion and should be about pleasure and exploration, traveling the world through the foods one eats. The evening will surely be an unbelievably memorable evening for food and wine lovers.

The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild. All throughout its history, twenty-six generations long, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment. In 1924, Niccolò Antinori scandalized Tuscany by making a Chianti containing Bordeaux wine varieties from a plot known as Tignanello. Niccolò retired in 1966, to be replaced by his son Piero who was even more innovative. He investigated different types of barrique, stainless steel vats, and malolactic fermentation of red wines. Emboldened by the success of the 20% Bordeaux blend Tignanello, in 1978 Antinori launched Solaia – containing 80% Cabernet Sauvignon – from the neighboring vineyard. For nearly fifty years, Piero was the driving force behind one of Italy’s biggest success stories, Marchesi Antinori Wines, and a leader in the renaissance of all Italian wines. Tradition, passion, and intuition are the three driving forces that led Marchesi Antinori to establish itself as one of the most important winemakers of elite Italian wine.

This will be a wonderful evening, and you can rest assured that you and your guests will arrive home safely due to the generosity of Unique Limousine and The Salinger Family who will provide luxury transportation for the evening.

BURGUNDY GRAND CRUS FROM DOMAINE DUJAC

Domaine Dujac was founded in 1967 by Jacques Seysses, the son of a wealthy biscuit manufacturer. Not long after purchasing vineyards in the late 1960s and releasing his first wines in the early 1970s, Seysses became an international icon. Jacques’ respect for the terroir of the Côte d’Or is still on display with his viticultural practices and innovative winemaking methods. Farming for all the vineyard holdings in the domain is all organic; no herbicides are used at all. The estate received organic certification in 2008. Dujac wines are more than just varietally correct – they are intimate travelogues of some of the most celebrated sites on earth.

Grand Cru (great growth) is the highest level in the vineyard classification of Burgundy. Most of the Grand Cru vineyards are located midway up the slope of the Côte d’Or (Golden Slope) where the best soil drainage and optimum sun exposure are found. Grand Cru red Burgundy wine is considered to be the finest, purest expression of the Pinot Noir grape. The origin of Burgundy’s Grand Crus can be traced to the work of the Cistercian monks in Medieval times, who, from amongst their vast land holdings in the region, were able to delineate and isolate plots of land that produced wine of distinct character.   Following the French Revolution, many of these vineyards were broken up and sold as smaller parcels to various owners. Domaine Dujac owns rows of vines in several Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of the Côte d’Or. Wines from these sites are some of the most highly prized, expensive, and sought-after on earth!

Includes:
• 2 – 750 ml 2017 Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru; WA 92-94
• 2 – 750 ml 2017 Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru; WA 93-95 “excellent depth and dimension, velvety textured”
• 2 – 750 ml 2017 Dujac Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru; WA 92-94 “Pure and fragrant…silky and succulent”

FARMING IN NAPA VALLEY SINCE 1916

DINNER AND CONVERSATION WITH TOM GAMBLE

Napa native Tom Gamble is a farmer first. “My most lasting memory of childhood is dirt. Playing in dirt. Walking in dust behind the tractor. Wearing out the seats in my jeans sliding down shale hillsides. Wandering aimlessly on foot, horseback and mini-bike all summer long, enjoying everything the dirt and our climate gives to life.” His boyhood days often began before sunrise herding cattle, working irrigation lines and emulating older ranchers and farmers. Tom has always held fast to his Napa roots where the Gamble family arrived, four generations ago. Tom continued the family legacy, planting his first vineyard in 1981, and he continues to farm to this day. Gamble Family Vineyards is his opportunity to share with future generations the hard work of generations past.

Tom’s vineyards lie in the heart of the prestigious Oakville AVA adjacent to the renowned Opus One and Cardinale wineries. His ultra-premium wines are rich, ripe, silky, and reflective of the terroir. Oakville is the AVA that initially put Napa on the world map as a great wine-producing region. As you enjoy Tom’s limited quantity releases, you will immediately understand why.

This auction lot is a Dutch Auction for thirty guests hosted by Tom. Tom will showcase a cross section of his current release wines and will illustrate the variety of flavor profiles that exist within his various vineyard locations. Tom Gamble is a farmer first, which is fitting, because good wine begins on the vine.

• Multi-course dinner for thirty prepared by the acclaimed Hilton 1700 Degrees culinary team
• Hosted by Tom Gamble, Owner and Winemaker, Gamble Family Vineyards

DUCKHORN PINOT NOIR

Includes:
• 6 – 1.5 L 2016 Goldeneye Pinot Noir
• 6 – 750 ml 2016 Goldeneye Gowan Creek Pinot Noir
• 6 – 750 ml 2016 Goldeneye Ten Degrees Pinot Noir

THE ICONIC WINES OF GAJA

Gaja is an Italian wine producer from the Piemonte region in the district of Langhe, chiefly producing a number of Barbaresco and Barolo wines from the Nebbiolo grape, and later diversified into Brunello and “Super-Tuscan” production. Its current owner and president Angelo Gaja is credited with developing techniques that have revolutionized winemaking in Italy, and terms such as “the undisputed king of Barbaresco”, and “the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world” have been applied to him. His Barbaresco wine is considered a status symbol on a par with Château Lafite-Rothschild or Krug Champagne.

The Gaja winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the Gaja family having arrived from Spain during the 17th century. In 1937, Giovanni Gaja, grandson of the founder, first put the name Gaja in big red letters on his bottles’ labels. The firm progressed following World War II as Gaja made a significant series of vineyard purchases. Angelo Gaja, (born 1940) great-grandson of Giovanni Gaja, began his career with the company in 1961. He introduced several practices to the region over the following years that were revolutionary to the vinification of Nebbiolo. Single vineyard production was started with Sorí San Lorenzo in 1967, Sorí Tildin in 1970 and Costa Russi in 1978. In the early 80’s, Angelo focused on growing imported grapes in Piemonte, but returned in 1988 to Nebbiolo with Barolo Sperss, first released in 1992. Further acquisitions saw Gaja own property in Montalcino, Tuscany, with the Pieve Santa Restituta estate, and the Ca’Marcanda property in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Angelo Gaja has since passed on the routine running of the firm to his daughters, Gaia and Rossana Gaja. The reputation of Gaja has evolved over the years as his uncompromising policies have produced tremendous results.

Their myriad programs break wine education into small pieces with the goal of de-mystifying the complicated intricacies of wine. Participation in this lot will provide you with a mind blowing epiphany of the components of wine to include sugar, acid, alcohol, tannin and oak and the way they interact to inform the flavor profile. Once complete, you will experience the various fruit profiles in wine illustrated by a comparison of Jelly Belly jelly beans compared to wines possessing the same profile.
