Lot 17-16

Second to None

The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 resulted from the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, when Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification system for France’s best Bordeaux wines that were to be on display for visitors from around the world. Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a château’s reputation and trading price, which at that time was directly related to quality. The wines were ranked in importance from first to fifth growths (crus).   With one exception, all of the wines in the classification were produced in the Medoc region of Bordeaux.

Generally speaking, in terms of quality, that list of Bordeaux wine producer rankings created in 1855 is not that far from how many people would rank those same wines today,   However, in more recent times, Bordeaux wine lovers have come up with an additional term, Super Second Bordeaux. Super Second Bordeaux wines were originally classified as Second Growth, but have improved in quality to approach that of the First Growths. They sell for more money than the other Second Growths, but they are generally not quite as expensive as the First Growths. All of the wines in this lot were originally classified as Second Growths, but in the opinion of many experts, should be elevated to a higher standing, almost if not quite on the level of the legendary First Growths.  The 2000 vintage was excellent in the Medoc, producing wines of great complexity and aging potential.

  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Chateau Montrose, Saint-Estephe, Gran Cru Classe du Medoc
  • 2 – 750 ml 2000 Chateau Pichon Longueville, Contesse de Lalande, Pauillac
  • 1 – 750 ml 2000 Chateau Pichon Longueville au Baron de Pichon Longueville, Pauillac
  • 2 – 750 ml 2000 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou, Saint-Julien
  • 3 – 750 ml 2000 Chateau Leoville Barton, Saint-Julien

Lot 17-18

Hundred Acre / Hundred Points

Jayson Woodbridge, owner, vintner, and visionary of Hundred Acre, has a motto: “stand amongst the very best or not at all;” he’s spared no expense assembling one of Napa Valley’s most exciting wines.  Woodbridge has managed to create what Robert Parker has called, “a terrific example of great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Everything is hand crafted, hand pruned, scrutinized and aligned for his desired response, near critical perfection and some of the finest wine known to man. His home vineyard, Kayli Morgan, is situated east of St. Helena. The most common characteristic among all of the Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignons is their incredibly opulent, creamy textures. That character vindicates Woodbridge’s harvesting decisions as he seems to achieve extraordinarily sweet, noble tannins in all of his wines.

“The perfect 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard spent 32 months in French oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. Like all of the Woodbridge wines, it can be noted for its inky/bluish purple color, extraordinary fragrance of white flowers, crème de cassis, blackberry and graphite. Totally opulent, this is a beautifully balanced, full-throttle and highly extracted wine with no hard edges and a finish of a good 45-50 seconds. The fruit character is vibrant and intense.  Drink it over the next 30 years.” – RP

  • 3 – 750 ml 2013 Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon, Kayli Moran Vineyard, in its original wooden case RP 100

Napa’s Rarest Treasures

This collection includes some of Napa’s most sought-after and hard to find Cabernet Sauvignon and blends.  Each of these producers is legendary for releasing extraordinary, high scoring wines year after year; they truly deserve to be labeled “cult classics.”

Dunn Vineyards dates from 1979 when Randy and Lori Dunn purchased their original 14-acre property high on Howell Mountain.  This is a small family owned winery with a philosophy of keeping a natural balance between the native vegetation and their vineyards.  Randy was one of the founding vintners who laid the groundwork for creating the Howell Mountain AVA.

David Abreu, from St. Helena, California, a graduate of the Viticulture and Enology program at UC Davis, founded Abreu Vineyards in 1980.  His label concentrates exclusively on estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon blends from his two Napa Valley vineyards. Distribution is extremely limited.  In 1998, Robert Parker included Abreu in his list of the “most influential wine personalities of the last 20 years.”

Araujo Estate Wines (renamed Eisele Vineyard Estate in 2016) is located in Calistoga, California within both the Calistoga and Napa Valley AVAs.  The estate produces a small portfolio of limited-production wines from the organically and biodynamically farmed Eisele Vineyard.  Araujo has been classified as a “five star” winery by the Wine Spectator writer James Laube and included in Robert Parker’s The World’s Greatest Wine Estates: A Modern Perspective.

Harlan Estate is a California wine estate producing Bordeaux style blends. The estate is located in the western hills of Oakville, California within the Oakville AVA.  It has been described as “the ultimate cult winery,” with its limited availability and high prices. Its flagship Harlan Estate is one of the most sought-after California wines on the market.

  • 1 – 750 ml 1982 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain RP 95 “splendidly opulent…the overall impression is one of lushness, as well as stunning richness and length.” WS 94 “the star of the vintage…”

  • 1 – 750 ml 1995 Araujo Estate Wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Eisele Vineyards, Napa Valley RP 98 “Araujo’s Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard has become a benchmark…It is close to perfection. A Napa Valley classic, it is full-bodied and extremely rich, yet retains its sense of balance and symmetry.” WS 95 “A sleek and elegant, rich and concentrated Cabernet…”
  • 2 – 750 ml 2003 Harlan Estate Red Wine, Napa Valley RP 98+ “Superb texture, low acidity, and gorgeous purity as well as richness…”
